Ankeny Centennial's fleet of 5 show choirs planned to travel to Hastings, MN on February 23rd to compete in the annual "Swingin on the River" competition. The school was aware of the impending winter storm, but they were leaving early enough to beat it!! They departed on 5:00pm Friday evening, arriving at their hotel before the storm came barreling in. On Saturday morning, the fleet took off to Hastings HS to compete.
A few schools pulled out of this competition due to the weather, but nothing could stop Ankeny Centennial. Wheaton-Warrenville South from Illinois was scheduled to travel to Hastings, but backed out on Friday due to the storm. Also, Waukee was scheduled to travel to Hastings, but also backed out on Friday, then headed to Southeast Polk. Waconia added to the competition line-up. They were scheduled to travel to Western Dubuque to compete at "The Main Event."

Ankeny Centennial's 2nd Varsity choir, "Eternal Rush," performed in the middle of the first afternoon block at 2:30pm. Centennial's 1st Varsity choir, "Spectrum" brought back the competition at 4:00pm after a short break. Ankeny Centennial hasn't attended this competition since 2016, where they earned Grand Champion along with Best Vocals and Best Choreography. In 2016, "Eternal Rush" also made finals and placed 5th Runner-Up.
After the competition, Centennial headed back to the hotel. A message was sent out to parents saying they were going to stay another night in Hastings due to impassable in Iowa & Minnesota. They will try and return home Monday morning, but could be moved.
"Spectrum" started out the beginning of the year at Linn-Mar, earning Best Vocals, Best Choreography, and Grand Champion. The next weekend, they competed at Johnston's "Showzam" where they placed 3rd. At Urbandale's Show Choir Invitational the group placed 4th. Now, they attained another Grand Championships with Best Vocals and Best Choreography.
"Spectrum" will complete their competition season at Heart of America Orlando on March 23rd. They will be competing against Shepherd Hill, Marysville, Westside, and Loveland for the title of Grand Champion.
Personally, I love their show this year. It is very clean and fun to watch. They have taken their costumes and props to a whole new level this year and it phenomenal!!
Keep up the great season "Spectrum!!" We are rooting for you in Orlando!! Safe Travels home, when you get a chance!!
