"Flight" takes another GC at one of the top Show Choir Events of the Year!!


On Saturday, February 9th, one of the top show choir events of the year happened in Troy, MO. This competition always hosts a great line-up, and this year was not short of that. 2 Prep Groups, 7 Women's Groups, and 10 Varsity Mixed Groups traveled to Troy to compete at the 2019 Troy-Buchanan "Show Choir Invitational."

The day started at 7:25am with the Women's Division kicking things off until about 10:45am. After that, the 2 Prep Division Groups kicked off their portion of the event. Starting at about 12:30pm, the 10 Varsity choirs brought crazy energy to the stage. The competition order goes as follows:

12:30 Marquette “Center Stage”
1:00 Wheaton Warrenville South “The Classics”
1:30 Warrensburg “Soundwave”
2:00 Broken Arrow “Tiger Rhythm”
2:30 Rock Bridge “City Lights”
3:00 Glenwood “Titan Fever”
3:30 Wheaton North “Flight”
4:00 Neosho “Choraleers”
4:30 Omaha Westside “The Amazing Technicolor Show Choir”
5:00 Mt. Zion “Swingsations”

Daytime Awards then took place after that. In the Prep Division Mt. Zion's "Premiere" was awarded first place. The competition was a little tougher in the Women's Division, but Wheaton-Warrenville South's "Espirit" pulled out a Women's Division Champion and a bid to perform in Finals. The top 4 Women's Division placements are found below:
1st: Wheaton-Warrenville South "Espirit"
2nd: Westside "Simply Irresistible"
3rd: Mt. Zion "Les Femmes"
4th: Broken Arrow "Tiger Mystique"

After Prep and Women's Divisions were announced, the Open Class had a few caption Awards to hand out. A list of the daytime Awards are listed below:
People’s Choice - Broken Arrow "Tiger Rhythm"
Outstanding female solo in a show - Westiside "ATSC" (Delaney Wetjen)
Outstanding male solo in a show - Wheaton North "Flight" (Chris Wiper)
Outstanding costumes - Mt. Zion "Swingsations"
Outstanding Crew - Rockbridge "City Lights"
Outstanding Opener - Westside "ATSC"
Outstanding Ballad - Wheaton North "Flight"
Outstanding Closer - Mt. Zion "Swingsations"

A source from showchoir.com state that Preliminary placements were as follows (keep these in mind):
1st: Westside "ATSC"
2nd: Wheaton North "Flight"
3rd: Mt. Zion "Swingsations"
4th: Glenwood "Titan Fever"
5th: Wheaton-Warrenville South "The Classics"
6th: Wheaton-Warrenville South "Espirit"
*the source also stated that points between all 6 were very close, you will see why in a minute.

The 6 above were selected to perform in finals and the order was selected at random. The order was as follows:
Wheaton-Warrenville South "The Classics"
Glenwood "Titan Fever"
Wheaton North "Flight"
Westside "ATSC"
Mt. Zion "Swingsations"
Wheaton-Warrenville South "Espirit"

Final Awards were very interesting. Best Band and Best Choreography tied with the top three choirs. Coming in 5th Runner-Up was Wheaton-Warrenville South "Espirit." Following them with 4th Runner-Up was their varsity choir, "The Classics." 3rd RU was awarded to Westside's "ATSC." 2nd RU was awarded to Mt. Zion's "Swingsations," who also tied for Best Choreography. 1st Runner-Up was given to Glenwood's "Titan Fever," with a Best Band tie. Grand Champion was awarded to Wheaton North's "Flight." "Flight" was also awarded Best Vocals and ties for Best Choreography with Mt. Zion and Best Band with Glenwood. Final awards were as follows:
Grand Champion: Wheaton North "Flight" (BV, BC - tie, BB - tie)
1st runner-up: Glenwood "Titan Fever" (BB - tie)
2nd runner-up: Mt. Zion "Swingsations" (BC - tie)
3rd runner-up: Westside "ATSC"
4th runner-up: Wheaton-Warrenville South "The Classics"
5th runner-up: Wheaton-Warrenville South "Espirit"

This is Wheaton North's 2nd Consecutive Grand Champion Sweep. "Flight" has never had a sweep before this year and now they have attained two. This year, Wheaton North also finished just behind Glenwood's "Titan Fever," who took  GC, BV, BC, BB at Mt. Zion. This match-up between the top 6 choirs was really close.

"Flight" Claims Grand Championship across town at Choral Classic

On Saturday, March 9th, 13 mixed show choirs and 3 womens show choirs traveled to Wheaton, IL for the renowned Choral Classic. This event has been a hot spot for show choirs for as long as people can remember. It never fails to amaze the spectators with the amount of talent that runs through the stage. The day kicked off with the Women's Division participants. After the three of them performed, the mixed division kicked off right away!! The talent kept growing throughout the day with groups traveling in from all across the country. Defending champions, "Titan Fever" closed out the daytime competition right before WWS "Espirit" presented their A-M-A-Z-I-N-G show. The daytime awards ceremony followed after WWS's exhibition performance. During daytime awards, each group was presented with a certificate of participation, then we went on to the actual awards. Hastings "Riverside Company" were the BIG WINNERS at "Competition of Excellence" 2019

" Riverside Company " was third to last to perform in the daytime round. Going into the competition, the group has earned 1 Grand Champion at Ankeny Centennial's "Mid-Iowa Show Choir Championships" earning Best Vocals, Best Band, and Best Male Soloist. " Riverside Company " also competed at the Onalaska "Classic" on January 12th, earning 3rd Place, right behind, Westside's "ATSC," and Bemidji's "Vocalmotive." Last year at Westside, " Riverside Company " earned 3rd Place alongside taking Best Closer.
