Weather Can't Stop Urbandale "Studio" from a Grand Champion!!

This past weekend, February 23rd, a Winter Storm was predicted surrounding the Des Moines Metro Area. Groups were scheduled to travel far to compete. On Friday, February 22nd, Waukee's "Millennium," "Nova," and "Spirt" were schedule to head to Hastings, MN. The administration suggested Waukee Show Choirs travel somewhere closer. They chose to compete at CR Kennedy's "Raise the Roof." Later that evening, Waukee's Show Choir's decided to change competitions once again, moving their competition to Southeast Polk.

Urbandale's "Studio" & "Vitality" had the same type of issues. Urbandale was scheduled to compete at CR Kennedy's "Raise the Roof." They decided it was in their best interest to compete somewhere closer. They ended up switching to Southeast Polk as well. Joining their friends from Johnston and Waukee.

Luckily, Southeast Polk was close to for Waukee & Urbandale to travel to. Southeast Polk had to do many revisions to the schedule with the addition of the choirs, as well as some choirs that dropped.

The day started out with Southeast Polk's "Rebel RAMS" exhibition. Kicking off the days competition was Johnston's newly created women's group, "Bella Voce," followed by Ankeny's "Intensity." After a short break, Waukee's "Spirt" show choir kicked off the Prep Division. A few choirs later, Waukee's newly formed women's choir, "Nova" competed in the 4A division. They were kind of an outlier because they were the only 4A competitor before lunch. This was more than likely due to the many revisions of schedules and less jostling groups around. Southeast Polk's "Sudden Impulse" completed the morning with an exhibition performance at 11:55am.

The afternoon kicked off with the only 1A/2A competitor, "Rhythmic Force" from BCLUW. After them, the final Prep Division group competed, Davenport West's "This Just In!" Finally, the 4A Division kicked off with Urbandale's "Studio" at 1:30pm. 8 4A Division groups compete before Southeast Polk's women's group, "Vocal Gold," completed the daytime.

Awards were announced at 6:00pm in the gym. The jam-packed gym was bursting with excitement with the best show choirs from the Des Moines area competing. The Women's Division awards were announced, with Ankeny's "Intensity" coming out on top. Next, the 1A/2A competitor was given their trophy. Prep Results were after that. Johnston's "Synergy" came out on top. In the 4A Division, Urbandale's "Studio" was in 1st. Several Caption Awards were also awarded to the 4A Division. You can see a full list of the results below:

After Urbandale "Studio's" performance, they loaded up their equipment and headed home. Not caring about the results, at this point, their top priority was to get the kids home safely. I am not sure of any other schools that did this, however I think Johnston might have.

Southeast Polk's "RAMification" closed out the day with their exhibition performance following all the finalists at 10:30pm. Final Awards were announced at 11:00pm. With many groups and parents gone due to weather, they were all awaiting the results announced via Twitter. Urbandale's "Studio" came out on top earning Best Vocals, Best Choreography, and Grand Champion.

Final Results:
GC: Urbandale "Studio" (BV, BC)
1st RU: Johnston "Innovation" (BB)
2nd RU: Ankeny "Visual Adrenaline"
3rd RU: Waukee "Millennium"
4th RU: Waukee "Nova"
5th RU: Johnston "Synergy"

Urbandale has completed a great season so far, and they hope to continue it. First, they competed at UNL "Midwest Cup," earning a Grand Champion sweep. The week after that, they competed at Johnston's "Showzam," defeating Waukee "Millennium," and Ankeny Centennial's "Spectrum," and earning another Grand Champion sweep. They hosted the USCI 2 weeks ago. They will finish out their competition season with a performance at Wheaton-Warrenville's South "Choral Classic" on March 9th.

What a great opportunity for Waukee and Urbandale!! Many choirs had to cancel their trips to a competition on February 23rd, but Waukee and Urbandale had the opportunity to travel close and still compete. Not everybody had that luxury!! Congratulations Urbandale on your Grand Champion!! Good luck in Illinois!!
